What is Strafe Jumping?
Strafe Jumping is a very useful skill to master in Quake 4, it allows you to move faster and jump further. It involves jumping while moving forward or backward and strafing left or right.
To increase your speed with strafe jumping, you must first be moving forward or backward. You then jump, strafe in one direction, and slightly turn the mouse toward that same direction. By alternating between left and right strafe on each jump, you can move in a nearly straight line at very high speed. You can also strafe jump in a curve by always strafing at the same direction.
How to do it
1) Find a big empty space to practice in, place yourself in one corner, run forward to the other end, never releasing the forward button and jump instantly each time you touch the ground. Do this until you feel you have control over it.
2) Now hold down a strafe key, in ADDITION to the forward key, and
immediately before each time you jump, strafe in a different direction and turn your mouse slightly towards that direction. Never release the strafe button, just switch between left and right each time you hit the ground.
This should give you a nice speed boost and make you jump longer, but will probably take some practice before you get it right.
