What is Rocket Jumping?
Rocket Jumping is when you point a rocket launcher
or another explosive weapon at the ground, and then jump and fire at the same time. The rocket's explosion adds to your jump velocity and can launch you to huge heights and distances.
The Rocket Jump exploit a feature of the Quake 4 Engine's damage model - when a player takes damage from one direction, his body will be knocked in the opposite direction, the more damage the bigger the push.
Players rocket jump to rescue themselves from lava, evade opponents, find strange camping spots and reach items.
The technique of Rocket Jumping
It is important that you jump before the rocket hits the ground, or you don't get nearly as far and you will take much more damage from the rocket.
To get the most boost, try to jump as close to the rockets explosion as possible, but always before, or you won't get the extra push.
If you just wanna get a little boost, time the rocket to explode when you are higher up in the jump, this will make your jump shorter, but you will loose less life.
Practice, practice
Practice your Rocket Jumping Skills by with the cheats: invulvernability and give ammo - so you don't have to worry about ammunition and health, for help, read our guide on how to enable cheats in quake 4. Load a map, take aim for the floor and try to find that perfect timing.
Advanced jumps
For instance, you can Rocket Jump up to a wall, and then shoot a rocket at it to get yourself higher or change your direction. The most spectacular flights can be achieved when mastering Rocket Jumping, which can be a reall thrill. Using Quad Damage will launch you a lot longer, but don't shoot it too close, or you will most likely die a horrible death. Other splash damage weapons, like the nailgun is better for Quad Damage - Rocket Jumping, since you won't loose as much health.
Rocket Jumping History
The technique of rocket jumping was first popularised in Quake (1996), but actully appeared before in Rise of the Triad (1994), where you could launch yourself into the air with the Firebomb Launcher, which was the only way of completing the final level in the game.
You could Rocket Jump horizontally in Doom (1993). According to John Romero, former id employee, it was the intended way to reach the secret exit in E3M6, although it could be reached in another way.
