Can I override the 60 FPS cap in Quake 4?

In Doom 3, which use the same engine as Quake 4, you could remove the 60 FPS cap this by setting “com_fixedtic -1”, but with Doom 3 patch 1.3 id Software removed it.
Quake 4's CAP
In Quake 4, the command is still there, but the -1 tweak is turned off.
The engine is capable of running at higher framerates than 60 FPS, but the decision was made to lock it to 60 FPS.
Why did id Software put a FPS Cap on Quake 4
John Carmack, lead programmer at id Software was not happy with the way certain framerates in Quake3 gave you benefit over other players. Putting a cap on the maximum FPS was a quick fix to remove those issues.
(editors note: Id rather have advantages at certain framerates than be limited to 60 FPS)
The FPS Cap is a trade off - Not a techinical limitation in the Engine.
In Doom 3, which use the same engine as Quake 4, you could remove the 60 FPS cap this by setting “com_fixedtic -1”, but with Doom 3 patch 1.3 id Software removed it, and the option has been turned off in Quake 4 since the launch.
Quoting John Carmack: "A fixed tic rate removes issues like Quake 3 had, where some jumps could only be made at certain framerates".
What do the fans think?
A lot of people have been looking for ways to turn off the Framerate Cap in Quake 4, me included. For us who enjoy smoother framerates, lets hope that id Software will Raise the FPS cap or even better, remove it completely in a future Quake 4 patch. |
